5:30 PM COUNCIL/STAFF PRE-MEETING. Staff briefed Council regarding items listed on the agenda of March 2, 2010.

6:00 PM Mayor called the REGULAR MEETING to order.

  • Mayor read a proclamation designating March 2-7, 2010, “Texas Week.”

Don Kelly, Chair of “Hood County Complete Count Committee” briefed the Council. The US Census, taken every 10 years, affects political representation and directs the allocation of billions of dollars in government funding. The City as a 2010 Census partner, can educate the community about the importance of participating in the 2010 Census event to help ensure no one is left uncounted and to help the community receive the fiscal and social benefits to which it is entitled. The Census will include both citizens

and non-citizens. In 2010, every residence will receive a short questionnaire that is simple and fast to complete and return. The Census Bureau does not release or share information that identifies individual respondents or their household for 72 years. More than 140,000 organizations supported Census 2000, including state and local governments, community and faith based organizations, schools, media, and businesses.

The Census bureau relies on partners to help explain the importance of completing the 2010 Census message to people in every corner of the United States. The Census

questionnaires will be mailed to households in February and March 2010.

From April

through July 2010, Census takers will visit households who did not return the questionnaire by mail. Mr. Kelley thanked the City Council and Staff for all the Committee has received from the City.
