of new businesses have opened and overall the town feels more aspirational and upmarket that was the case 5 years ago.

  • The Town now operates late night shopping during the Christmas


Tourism and Leisure

  • Work is taking place to develop a “discovery” centre in the town.

  • Funding has been secured to undertake improvements to the Country Park, including improved play facilities, fitness trail and discussion are taking place about an asset transfer to the Town Council or community group of the old toilet block.

  • The tourism season continues to lengthen and the Filey Brigg caravan Park opens for longer throughout the year.

  • New features have been developed including “the Maze” and long standing events such as the Filey Festival continue to be successful.

  • Although the Town still lacks a cinema, there are now film showings at the Concert Hall.

Sports and Leisure

  • This remains a priority in the new plan; however improvements have been made with the new Filey Sports facility completed with grants from the Town and Borough Councils as well as other sources.

  • Provision for young people has also improved with the Multi-Use Games Area, youth shelter and Bloxx.


  • A year round Sunday service is now provided on the Scarborough – Hull train service.

  • Bus services have improved although early morning buses remain an issue.

  • Concessionary fares have been extremely popular with older people, enabling them to travel freely on public transport within the Borough and beyond.

  • The 121 bus shelter was relocated following concerns raised by local people.

Children’s Centre

  • The Filey Children’s Centre is an important resource for the Town and provides a range of activities, services and support for children aged 0- 5 and their families.


  • Employment opportunities in the town remain limited and this is highlighted in the new plan, however, the opening of the new Tesco Store will create in excess of 100 now jobs and the extension of the tourist season has provided more opportunities for people employed within the tourism and hospitality industries locally.

  • Schools offer an increased range of vocational qualifications.
