Finding Staff

  • Biggest hurdle for foreign firms is finding good bilingual staff

    • Only 80,000 or so young Japanese travel abroad to learn English fluently

    • There are 5,000+ foreign firms employing 1m people (about 150K bilinguals), and need at least 30K fresh bilinguals a year

    • 1.5m Japanese firms, with unlimited consumption of bilinguals

    • Engineers and sales people hardest to source

    • Recently many bilingual foreigners – but don’t use for account management

  • If you have funding constraints

    • Focus on hiring the first person through recruiter

    • Make sure the person has extensive personal network and can pull in others

    • Online job boards, local foreign newspapers

    • Recruiting Japanese here in Australia – have personality double-checked (MM)

  • Adequate funding

    • Recruiters for senior team

    • Build brand alongside recruiting effort and focus on mass media, Internet job boards

    • If you have no brand recognition and no marketing budget, then use recruiters and offer incentives for staff to introduce friends

    • Bring in fresh graduates and put them through a Japanese-style program – particularly useful for sales and support positions
