Racial Attitudes

  • Japanese have such a complex society, they have little time for outsiders

    • Manifested by not wanting to deal with foreigners if they don’t know how things work (landlords, hiring, etc.)

  • Japanese are not necessarily racist, but very quick to pick up on differences

    • Westerners have been source of power and technology and thus are considered teachers and “surgeons”

    • Other ethnic groups considered as needy and wanting to take food from the table – thus a threat to the village

    • Manifested as:

      • Immigration inequity, factory jobs

      • No equality laws based on race

      • No interest in using immigration as means to deal with aging population
