nalman at Heaton and later Howdon, had built me my first ‘OO’ model railway. It was probably the best model railway a four year old has ever had. I even used to push the trains around when we had power cuts!

Every holiday throughout my childhood, wherever we were in Britain, Dad always managed to ‘accidentally’ stumble upon a preserved steam railway. Over the years I was treated to rides on the Dart Valley, the Worth Valley, Lakeside & Haverthwaite, Welshpool & Llanfair and many more. Steamtown Carnforth in its heyday was a particular favourite. I can’t understand why it closed. I also have very fond memories of the old York Railway Museum on Queen Street, not least because you could climb on all the loco footplates.
