CRITICAL JOB FUNCTIONS
In the area of emergency operations for a probationary fire fighter, critical job functions
that must be mastered in the first year are:
Taking orders and following directions from officers and personnel placed in the line of
Emergency ground safety and use of personal protective gear.
Basic fire ground strategies and tactics, offensive and defensive modes.
SCBA donning, care and maintenance
Attack and supply line functions, connections and advancements.
Location of all tools and appliances carried on the operating engines and ladders.
Proper uses for all hand tools on apparatus.
Ground ladder operation and placement
Ventilation techniques and procedures.
All basic fire fighting essentials
Basic EMT status:
Taking patients vital signs
Setting up I.V. lines to assist AEMT’s
