The seminal full-length study of the development of artists’ books as a twentieth-century art form. This book situates artists’ books within the con- text of mainstream developments in the visual arts and is designed to raise critical and theoreti- cal issues as well as provide an historical overview. Drucker explores more than two hun- dred individual books in relation to their struc- ture, form, and conceptualization.

NIGHT CRAWLERS ON THE WEB Johanna Drucker Poetry • 2000 • ISBN 1-887123-42-3 • $12 PB • 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" • 26 pp
Night Crawlers on the Web evokes one of Johanna Drucker’s passions—the Victorian novel. Here she paints a somewhat Gothic landscape peopled with hi- tech, lo-cal humanoids who speak in a language built largely around the ubiquity of consumer computers. Words like “mode” “display” “browser” “pixel” proliferate as our protagonist wills an intangible cyber lover into existence. Somewhat reminiscent of William Burroughs, this is a humorous and imaginative romp through the looking glass which seems to mediate a great many of our daily lives.
Writer and scholar JOHANNA DRUCKER has been making artists’ books since 1972. Her books include: Emerging Sentience (JabBooks, with Brad Freeman), Dark Decade (Detour Press) and A Girl’s Life (Granary Books, with Susan Bee).
