DOINGS: ASSORTED PERFORMANCE PIECES 1955-2002 Jackson Mac Low
The publication of Doings: Assorted Performance Pieces 1955-2002 by Jackson Mac Low coincides with the poet’s eightieth birthday celebration. Termed “America’s most indefatigable experimental poet” by Publishers Weekly, Mac Low has long been con- sidered a master innovator. This vol- ume brings together a comprehensive collection of Mac Low’s scores written over the past 40 years, complete with their performance instructions, pro- viding a superb overview of these remarkable compositions. This collection presents facsimile reprints of the artist’s handwritten as well as typographical scripts providing a striking graphic presence to the work. The book contains recent work as well as substantial sections from the near legendary “Vocabulary Gathas” and includes a studio-quality CD of recordings, produced by Charlie Morrow, yielding a treasure of previously unpublished work, and contribut- ing to a more complete picture of this maestro of the avant-garde. “ A G E N I U S o f h i s a r t . . . l o n g r e c o g n i z e d a s t h e m o s t d e f i n i n g o f A m e r i c a n e x p e r i m e n t a l i s m , b o t h w i t h r e s p e c t t o t e x t a n d t o p e r f o r m a n c e . ”
