ON THE BOOK Ligorano/Reese and Gerrit Lansing

On the Book by New York-based artist team Ligorano/Reese and poet Gerrit Lansing is a full- color conceptual essay and artists’ book based on photo documentation of Spanish bookbinding from the 13th to the 18th century. Nora Ligorano’s photo research of ancient books from the major libraries and archives of Spain is subtly transformed into abstracted objects. The artists enlarge, crop, and manipulate the images to recontextualize the surface ornamentation and structural design of these early books. Marshall Reese and Gerrit Lansing’s poetic text interposes the exquisite visual elements creating a meditation on the word and writing. On the Book is a testament to the book as the most elegant information storage and retrieval mechanism ever invented.

NORA LIGORANO & MARSHALL REESE collaborate on installations, videotapes, artists’ books and multiples. Their work plays on the presence of television in our culture and the impact of technology and new media on society. In 2001, MIT Media Lab and the Kitchen commissioned them to make an interactive installa- tion for the exhibition “ID/entity” which focuses on how technology has changed portraiture. Ligorano/Reese have exhibited widely in the United States and in Europe and they are cur- rently working on a new installation for the American Craft Museum in New York.
