April Brown Bag Luncheon Recap

Michelle Licht, National Press Club

O n April 19th, 2011, the programs committee hosted the second AMPs Brown Bag Luncheon at the newly renovated Washington Hilton, in the Holmead room. The program was Forming Your Own Company or Small Busi- ness. A lot of great ideas were shared between the 4 mentors and 8 mentees that were in attendance.

If you are thinking about starting your own business here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Build Relationships — take potential clients out for coffee or lunch to get to know them one on one.

  • Be Involved — join the appropriate associations, clubs and organizations, chamber of commerce, or the local ro- tary club.

  • Take advantage of social media; send newsletters and blasts to databases; use Constant Contact (www.constant- contact.com) for email marketing and online surveys.

  • Be sure you know the skills of your business partners, what are your strengths and weaknesses?

  • Be careful with the assignments you take on — don’t over- load yourself when first starting out.

  • Be sure to obtain general liability insurance to protect your business and employees.

  • Ask for referrals and testimonials from clients to put on your website.

Our mentors all agreed that when starting your own business, create a vision for your company, ask where you want to be in 1 or 2 years, and most of all be passionate about what you are doing, be outgoing and have an entrepreneurial spirit! Thanks to everyone that attended. <
