European Digital Library
Europeana, the French contribution to the European Digital Library, has just been put online by the "Bibliothèque nationale de France (BNF)". It is to develop by means of the European Library portal.
Europeana is a model that gives access to 12,000 copyright-free unabridged documents from the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the National Szechenyi Library in Hungary, and the National Library of Portugal. The Europeana model will make it possible to test, with a big volume of documents, the search functions that can be used in a digital library, and to fuel the debate with the BNF's European partners.

2006 Annual Report of the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons (OFPRA)
The Report reviews the various missions conducted by OFPRA in 2006, such as the processing of applications for asylum and stateless person status, protection-related missions, legal activities, addressing topical issues, and so on. The Report also describes OFPRA resources, including in terms of human resources, modernisation and equipment.
As a result of the investigations conducted by OFPRA in 2006 refugee status was granted to 7,354 people (as against 13,770 in 2005), which brought the number of refugees in France to 123, 000 so that France is still the leading European country in terms of applications for asylum. The principal refugee-hosting region is the Ile-de-France with 47.3% of refugees, far ahead of the Rhône-Alpes region with 8.9% and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) region with 5.1%. The decrease is due mostly to the abatement of certain conflicts, as observed by the UNHCR. For example, applications from Haiti dropped by 63.5% in 2006.
