  • Approximately 10-27% of post-stroke patients have depression as a co-morbidity.31

  • 1 in 3 HIV patients may experience depression.31

  • 50% of Parkinson’s disease patients may experience depression.31

  • 50-75% of eating disorder patients (anorexia and bulimia) experience depression.31

  • 27% of individuals with substance abuse disorders (both alcohol and other substances) have some form of depression.31

  • Other psychiatric disorders that often present as depression or co-occur with depression include the following:

    • Anxiety disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder.32

    • Researchers found that more than 40% of people with PTSD also had depression at one- and four-month intervals after the traumatic event.33

    • Alcohol and other substance abuse or dependence is pervasive among the U.S. population.34

Examples of medical conditions that may present initially as depression include the following:

  • Viral illness

  • Malignancies

  • Endocrine disorders

  • Anemias or other hematologic deficiencies

  • Post-CVA

  • Rheumatoid disorders, lupus

  • Parkinson’s disease or other CNS disorders

  • Sleep apnea

In theory, treatment of the condition will alleviate or possibly eliminate depression; however treatment of the medical condition may need to coincide with treatment of the depression. Certain medications prescribed for medical conditions can also trigger depression. It is essential that the PCP take a complete inventory of all prescribed and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. The PCP can coordinate appropriate medical treatment while making a referral for consultation with mental health professionals.
