  • Finally, these symptoms and change in mood must affect the individual’s

job performance, social behavior, and relationships with others.

Dysthymia

According to the DSM-IV, individuals with the following symptoms meet the criteria for Dysthymia:45

  • Depressed mood for most of the day, for more days than not, as indicated either by subjective account or observation by others, for at least two years. During this two-year period, the individual has never been without symptoms. No major depression episode, mania, or psychosis has been present during these two years.

  • In children and adolescents, the mood can be irritable and duration must be at least one year.

  • Symptoms are not due to substance use or general medical conditions such as hypothyroidism.

  • Two or more of the following must be present while the individual is depressed:

    • Poor appetite or overeating

    • Insomnia or hypersomnia

    • Low energy or fatigue

    • Low self-esteem

    • Poor concentration

    • Difficulty making decisions

    • Feelings of hopelessness

  • The symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

Diagnosis is sometimes communicated by diagnostic codes in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD).
