G.2.1: Create and adopt the following policies to provide the framework for a comprehensive curriculum development system:

  • A policy that provides a clear philosophical framework for the development of curriculum.

  • A policy that requires the alignment of written, taught and tested curriculum.

  • A policy that specifies the procedures for the design and implementation of curriculum, including

a curriculum development cycle and the development and revision of curriculum guides.

  • A policy that requires board adoption of the curriculum.

      2.2: Develop and adopt a policy that delineates district responsibilities and school-based

responsibilities for curriculum decision-making.

G.2.3: Direct the superintendent to design a comprehensive curriculum development plan to be

presented for Board approval. G.2.4: Approve the curriculum prior to implementation.

Approval should be based upon the

appropriateness of curriculum guides that have high quality beyond the minimalist Washington State Education Department’s Essential Academic Learning Requirements.

Administrative Functions: The following actions are recommended to the Clover Park School District Superintendent:

A.2.1: Recommend to the Board a set of policies for the design and implementation of curriculum and provide other necessary assistance for their development and adoption.

A.2.2: Assist the Board in developing a policy framework that delineates district responsibilities and school-based responsibilities for curriculum and program decision-making.

A.2.3: Assess the current practices in place in the district for curriculum development and assign a top-level administrator responsible for planning, directing and coordinating improved curriculum design in the system with emphasis on articulation from grades K-12, and coordination across grades and between schools.

A.2.4: Create a curriculum committee to include representation of parents and other community stakeholders, teachers across grade levels, curriculum specialists, and school administrators to review current practices and recommend appropriate changes.

A.2.5: Coordinate a review of current research, current thinking, and the requirements of state and national documents with a view to incorporating best practices and legal compliance into the curriculum.

    2.6: Develop a comprehensive curriculum management structure that will include:

    • Philosophical framework for the design of the curriculum.

    • A standard curriculum guide format that includes:

    • Clear objectives,

    • Congruence of curriculum with assessment process,

    • A scope and sequence of the teaching of skills, knowledge and attitudes,

    • Identification of instructional resources, and

    • Specific strategies for classroom use.

    • Curriculum documents that align the written, taught, and tested curriculum;

    • A periodic cycle of curriculum review for all subject areas at all grade levels; amd

    • Procedures for monitoring curriculum delivery.

    2.7: Develop a communication plan to assist staff in understanding the curriculum design and

delivery process with the goal of promoting coordinated curriculum implementation.
