Municipal Police Employees' Retirement System

Membership is mandatory for any full-time police officer employed by a municipalityof the State of Louisiana and engaged in law enforcement empowered to make arrest, providing they do not have to pay social security and providingthey meet the statutory criteria. Employees who retire at or after age 50 with at least 20 years of credited service, or at or after age 55 with at least 12 years of credited service are entitled to a retirement benefit payable monthly for life, equal to 3 1/3 percent of their average final compensation multiplied by the employee's years of credited service. Final compensation is the employee's monthly earnings duringthe 36 consecutive or joined months that produce the highest average. The System also provides death and disability benefits. Benefits are established by state statute.
