bindingly, confidentially and dependably in the electronic world as well. E-Postbriefs are automatically encoded and cannot be viewed or altered by unauthorised third parties. Users can choose by clicking a mouse whether their letter will be directly delivered elec- tronically to another E-Postbrief account or automatically printed out by the German Post Office, put in an envelope, and delivered in the traditional way by a postman. All users have to identify themselves once at a post office using a “postident” procedure with their ID card or passport. Only then will your E-Postbrief account be enabled. This means that anonymous messages are not possible, and nor are spam and viruses.
According to recent surveys, more than 60 per cent of all Germans are familiar with the E-Postbrief. Over a million people have already secured a personal E-Postbrief address at www.epost.de, and the number is still rising. More and more companies and institu- tions, too, from the business community and the civil service are making use of this op- tion for secure electronic communication.
