Brendel pupil Kit Armstrong will be painting a musical portrait of Liszt on his piano in the “Franz Liszt Night” (4 August). Corinna Harfouch (recitation) and Hideyo Harada (piano) will also be hosting a musical-literary programme on the Franz Liszt Year (9 July). Other reciters this summer are Udo Samel (29 June), Ulrich Noethen (12 Au- gust) and Rosel Zech (17 July).
Encouraging young talent The Rheingau Music Festival has always attached high priority to providing a plat- form for talented young musicians. Besides the “Youth Meeting Point” and “Clas- sical Marathon” events (both concerts in the Wiesbaden Assembly Rooms on 21 August), the festival will also be presenting, in its “Young Virtuosi” series, the cellist Julian Steckel, winner of the first prize at the ARD’s 2010 competition, with solo suites by Bach (30 June), young virtuoso pianists from the Russian school (10 July), the pianist Igor Levit (31 July), the brothers Julian & Roman Wasserfuhr with their quartet (7 August) and the Russian cellist Dimitri Maslennikov (18 August).
Children’s concerts The RMF is also committed to getting young people interested in music. In addition to the Children’s Concert at Johannisberg Palace (14 August), there is a whole se- ries of concerts scheduled specifically for younger audiences – the cushion concerts
in the Yellow Hall of the Elector’s Castle in Eltville on 17 July, 24 July, 7 August
and on 21 August, the cushion opera “Tosca” for children. “Ritter Rost”, the “Knight in Rusty Armour”, will be celebrating “Christmas” early on 18 December in the Wine- press Hall of the Reinhartshausen Kempinski Palace.
Children’s party For the second time in the Rheingau Music Festival’s history, in addition to the Pal- ace Party and the Summer Party, there’s a separate party specially for children! On 10 July, in the gigantic grounds of the St. Vincenzstift monastery in Aulhausen. With singer-songwriter Fredrik Vahle, with a sound garden, with Doctor Döblinger’s taste- ful puppet show, and much, much more.
Jazz and world music The events featuring jazz and world music are held at special venues, and often in the open air, like the lake stage at Vollrads Palace, on the MS RheinEnergie, at win- eries, in Steinberg Castle, at the manor farm of the Reinhartshausen Kempinski Pal- ace, in the Cuvéehof of Johannisberg Palace, or in the spa gardens at Wiesbaden. Omara Portuondo & Chucho Valdes (3 July), Dianne Reeves, Angélique Kidjo & Lizz Wright (30 June), the hr Big Band with Freddy Cole (3 July) and the Finnish a- cappella group Rajaton with an ABBA Night in J'berg (1 July) will be appearing at the Cuvéehof, the African songstress Buika will be making her RMF debut on the lake stage (28 July), the Dutch singer-songwriter Wouter Hamel in the spa gardens (5 August). With his new trio partners, Jacky Terrasson will pushing the envelope of rhythm and harmony in Rüsselsheim’s Municipal Theatre (6 August).
