What are the implications of modifications?

    • It is crucial that parents realize the implications of a modified program and are clearly notified.

    • In high school a modified program indicates that a student will not complete the Dogwood Certificate for Graduation and will receive a leave-taking certificate. That means they do not have access to college unless they upgrade.

    • It is easy for the gap in achievement to become so great that the student cannot catch up (if the student has the cognitive capability but lacks some skills).

    • A program of interventions and remediation that bring the student close to Grade Level or to the performance standards may circumvent the need for a Modified program. If they clearly cannot handle any of the academics with adaptations we must consider modifications with appropriate consultation with administration, parents, teachers, and other associated professionals.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  • This document addresses some of the issues of adaptations but not all. This is a complex topic which is best addressed through staff and administration collaboration time or some format that allows for discussion and thought.
