Biotech Expo The Biotech Expo Middle School Poster Competition awards were hosted in February 2010, by the Explorit Science Center in Davis, CA. In this second year of competition, thirty regional students in grades 6-9 submitted poster displays to illustrate current research areas in biotechnology. Participants hailed from Holmes Middle School (Davis), Willett Elementary School (Davis), Einstein Middle School (Sacramento), St. Rose of Lima Catholic School (Roseville) and Rolling Hills Middle School (El Dorado Hills). Winners were honored to exhibit their work at the Linking Education and Economic Development (LEED) Convergence for regional educators on February 19th. Thanks to North Valley Biotech Center and Explorit for co-sponsoring the event and to Elenor Castillo, CREATE-IGERT trainee, for participating in the judging.

Biotech Teachers Congratulations to BioTech SYSTEM member Joan Vreeburg of El Molino High School for winning recognition as California’s 2010 Outstanding Biology Teacher. Joan is an active member of BioTech SYSTEM, completing our Summer Institute in Bioinformatics in 2010, and participating in consortium activities throughout the year. Joan has developed a Biotechnology Outreach Program that matches AP Biology and Biotechnology students with Algebra I students, teaching biotechnology labs to help illustrate the uses of algebra in science. Last summer, Joan piloted a Biotechnology Middle School Summer Step-Up Class, with current and former science students volunteering to teach the hands-on activities with the middle school students.
