Objectives

As the ARV therapy reaches out to more and more HIV/Aids cases, we need to consider the nutrition aspect of those people on ARV therapy.

Case Study – Rainbow ARV Clinic

Rainbow ARV Clinic at Mzuzu Central Hospital began the ARV therapy since 1st July, 2004. We have measured the body weight and height of every case and calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI=Weight in kg/(height in meter)2) at the Rainbow clinic.

Nutrition Composition

The nutritional composition for these HIV/Aids cases are higher in proteins and carbohydrates. There are two categories as below:

50% Proteins + 40% Carbohydrates + 10% Fats, for BW >50kg

40% Proteins + 50% Carbohydrates + 10% Fats, for BW <50kg

Results

BMI of cases on ARV treatment has increased gradually in the first three months since their ARV theatment and stabilizes after six months. The details will be presented in the conference.

Discussions

To assure the success of the Nutrition program, ARV clinics should consider to build up its own capacity for the implementation of the program. Nutritional support is useful for those who start ARV therapy in order to improve and maintain their body weight gain at the first six months. The nutrition program is especially important for low-income persons who cannot afford balanced diets consistently. In order to ensure the cost effectiveness of the nutrition programmes, the material for the nutrition programmes should utilize locally grown crops as more as possible.
