OUR SCHOOLS ARE PART OF THAT MOVEMENT, AND SO I'M JUST SAYING TO ALL OF YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, FOR WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND DON'T FORGET OUR CHILDREN.

SUP. MOLINA, CHAIR: THANK YOU. MISS WRIGHT?

PAM WRIGHT: MY NAME IS PAM WRIGHT AND I AM EMPLOYED BY THE L.A. COUNTY OF EDUCATION. I AM A TEACHER RESPONSIBLE FOR MISSION INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM IN POMONA. THE THREE STUDENTS YOU JUST HEARD FROM ARE MY STUDENTS AND I HAVE TO SAY, I AM REALLY OVERWHELMINGLY PROUD OF MY STUDENTS. I STARTED THIS PROGRAM IN MAY OF 2006 BECAUSE THERE WAS A NEED IN THE COMMUNITY FOR PARENTING TEENS THAT HAD NO OTHER PLACE TO ATTEND HIGH SCHOOL. THESE STUDENTS CANNOT ATTEND TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS OR OTHER ALTERNATIVES BECAUSE THEY NEED CHILD CARE, AND MANY OF THEM HAVE JOBS. WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF STARTING THIS PROGRAM, I HAD ENROLLED 28 STUDENTS. SINCE MAY OF 2006, WE HAVE HAD 66 GRADUATES FROM HIGH SCHOOL, WE HAVE CONSISTENTLY HAD AN ENROLLMENT OF 20 TO 22 STUDENTS, AND WE MAINTAIN A WAITING LIST. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT OF MY STUDENTS PASS THE CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM AND 100 PERCENT OF MY STUDENTS GRADUATE. OVER 90 PERCENT OF MY STUDENTS ARE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS AND THEY ALL COME TO MISSION INDEPENDENT STUDY BEHIND IN HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS. IN ADDITION, NEARLY EVERY STUDENT ENTERS OUR PROGRAM READING FAR BELOW
