CAL REMINGTON: WELL, ULTIMATELY, IF THEY REFUSE, IT COULD BE INSUBORDINATION, BUT I DO NOT THINK THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN, MADAME CHAIR. I THINK THEY'LL CALL THEIR UNION, I THINK IT WILL BE STRAIGHTENED OUT. I DO NOT THINK IT WILL GET TO THAT POINT, BUT ULTIMATELY THEY AGREE, THESE ARE QUESTIONS THAT THE EMPLOYEE HAS TO ANSWER AND NEEDS TO ANSWER. THE ISSUE THAT THEY WERE CONCERNED ABOUT DOES NOT RELATE TO THESE QUESTIONS.

SUP. MOLINA, CHAIR: ALL RIGHT. I THINK THAT, AGAIN, WE HAVE SUCH A HUGE RESPONSIBILITY TO GET THIS DEPARTMENT BACK IN ORDER. I THINK THAT THE BASIC ISSUES OF EMPLOYEE MANAGEMENT AND WE AS THE EMPLOYER, WE HAVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. I WANT US TO BE RESPECTFUL OF UNION RULES, BUT THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM, AND I THINK THAT WE NEED TO SEND A FORMAL LETTER TO MR. MILLER CHASTISING HIM FOR THIS KIND OF EFFORT, AND I JUST DON'T THINK THIS IS APPROPRIATE. NOW GRANTED, IT WAS PROBABLY NOT APPROPRIATE FOR US TO BE GOING THROUGH INDIVIDUAL LOCKERS IF THAT'S NOT APPROPRIATE EITHER, BUT AGAIN, THIS IS NOT THE WAY WE ARE GOING TO OPERATE THIS DEPARTMENT. WE NEED TO GET TO SOME BASIC MANAGEMENT CONTROL, SINCE IT'S BEEN OUT OF CONTROL FOR YEARS, AND I THINK THAT HOPEFULLY THE UNION IS GOING TO DO WHAT THEY SAY, WHICH IS WORK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DEPARTMENT AND WITH THIS BOARD. HOPEFULLY YOU COULD ENCOURAGE THEM TO RESCIND THIS ACTION AND TO, YOU KNOW, PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN.
