Estimated and Monitored Data
WBC currently does not monitor SO2 concentrations within it’s District. The nearest UK AURN site is located at Reading and represents an urban background location. The site is likely to recorded concentrations similar to those experienced within urbanised areas in West Berkshire. Concentrations of SO2 monitored during 2001 at the Reading site are shown in Table 9.1.
Maximum 15 minute mean
266 (not to be exceeded more than 35 times)
Maximum hourly mean

The objectives for SO2 allow a limited number of exceedences of the limit values within a year (as reported in Table 2.1). The 15 minute objective of 266 µg/m3 is considered to be the most stringent objective for SO2 and specifies a maximum of 35 periods within a year that may exceed the 266 µg/m3 objective. Only one site in the AURN network (Belfast East) was reported to exceed this criteria.
