4. Meet the work experience requirement (PERC).

As a CGA student, you will balance your part-time studies with full-time work experience, giving you the best of both worlds. To obtain your designation, you must have 24 months of professional-level work experience related to accounting and/or financial management to complement your course knowledge. This ensures you have the practical experience – and on-the-job competencies – required of a professional accountant.

Once again, the focus is on flexibility. You can meet this requirement by working in any business sector and in a variety of fields. We expect you to be employed in a position that asks you to apply accounting knowledge and think independently, and where you are responsible for preparing and interpreting financial information.

Many CGA students move from one industry to another or from one branch of financial management and accounting to another. This flexibility to obtain varied experience is one of the major advantages of the CGA program.

Your professional-level work experience might include:

Finance, Accounting & Management Control

  • Accounting for business combinations

  • Calculating earnings per share

  • Supervising employees

  • Performing job costing

  • Preparing budgets and variance analysis

  • Cash flow planning and evaluating cost of capital

Information Systems

  • Analyzing requirements

  • Preparing testing systems and user procedures


  • Audit of sales and collection cycle

  • Testing of internal controls

  • Analyzing audit results

  • Program development and auditing through the computer system

Public Service

  • Accounting for funds, revenues and expenditures

  • Exercising commitment authority

  • Preparing budgetary reports and presenting public information


  • Share disposition on reorganization of capital

  • Purchase or sale of assets of a business

  • Computing capital dividend election

General Management

  • Strategic planning and team building

  • Preparing and delivering presentations
