Show Manager of the Year Award Winners Celebrated
This year’s SMOTY awards were especially memorable in that each winner’s company matched The Expo Group’s charitable donation – resulting in $10,000 raised to help others. The ceremony also was poignant in that Winner Nancy Jo Wiggin was unable to attend the ceremony due to stem-cell transplant treatment for cancer.
In a letter to the audience, Nancy Jo stated: “I am sorry I cannot be there in Atlanta physically to meet all of you, but spiritually I will be with you. I would like to congratulate all the winners and thank The Expo Group for this prestigious award. Have a wonderful time, and please have a drink for me.”
Tier IV – 701 to 1,500 booths: Claire Kilcoyne, Vice President, Trade Shows, PSMJ Resources
And that’s exactly what we did! A special thanks also goes to our sponsors this year, Wyndham Jade, Presenting Atlanta and the Atlanta Convention and Visitors’ Bureau. Also thank you to the SMOTY judges: Robert Dallmeyer, President of RD International; Sam Lippman, President, integrated show management & marketing; Donna Sanford, Publisher, EXPO Magazine; Adam Schaffer, now Group Publisher, 1105 Media; and Donald Svehla, Publisher, Exhibit City News.
Tier V – 1,501+ booths: Charles Olentine, Executive Vice President, U.S. Poultry and Egg Association
Awards Dinner Raises $10,000 for Charity
It was truly a weekend for celebrating success Nov. 1-4 in Atlanta.
The Expo Group SMOTY Awards kicked off the Celebrating Success weekend on Nov. 1, which picked up steam at the World of Coca-Cola for the opening of Tradeshow Week Fastest 50 the next evening, grew to a crescendo at the TSW Fastest 50 Gala that Saturday, and wound down on Nov. 4 at the Georgia Aquarium.
All SMOTY award winners were celebrated at the SMOTY dinner, where they received their iconic trophy, and at the TSW Fastest 50 Gala, where the SMOTY winners were special honorees during the program recognizing the fastest-growing shows in the U.S. and Canada.
“We started these awards eight years ago to honor the people who make our industry great,” says The Expo Group President and CEO Ray Pekowski. “This year the SMOTY Awards were a great complement to the Tradeshow Week awards honoring the shows with growing exhibitor space. It was a first- class weekend that made us realize how fortunate we are to be successful in this business. ”
