ANTICHRIST, AMERICA, AND ARMAGEDDON
Even among non-Christians, there is a certain fascination with the Antichrist. He is the subject of Hollywood movies and countless discussions. Scripture contains more than 100 passages that describe aspects of the Antichrist and his ultimate fate.
Most people understand that he will be the most wicked individual who has ever walked the earth, and that he is a key gure in end times events. He will be involved in the battle of Armageddon, a
nal war against what Scripture describes as the kings of the east, at the Valley of Megiddo,
culminating in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
Let’s see what else Scripture tells us about the Antichrist, along with the role of America in end times events.
The arrival of the Antichrist (Revelation 6:1-2). Some mistaken believe the rider in Verses 1-2 is Christ, but he wears only one crowd while Jesus is described as wearing many crowns in Revelation 19:12. This ts neatly because the Antichrist is not only “against” Christ, but he is also “imitating” Christ. He will be charismatic and inuential, able to do things that are impossible—like forging real peace in the Middle East and allowing the Jews to rebuild the Temple. His accomplishments will be such that people will see him as a messiah.
The reality of the Antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:3, 8). Just as the Roman Empire and Adolf Hitler
rst appeared to be benevolent leaders, the Antichrist will not show his true colors initially. But Scripture identies him as “the man of sin” and “the wicked one.” In reality, he will be a bloodthirsty dictator who makes the evil men of world history seem like lightweights in comparison.
The revelation of the Antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4). After a period of three-and-a-half years, the Antichrist will reveal his real agenda in what is called the “abomination of desolation”—commanding everyone to worship him and desecrating every other religious institution. War, pestilence, and famine will follow as the other three horses of Revelation 6 are unleashed on the world.
The impact of the Antichrist (Revelation 19:20; 13:16). Assisting the Antichrist will be someone described as the false prophet, completing a sort of unholy trinity. The false prophet will work to deceive the people of the world into worshipping the Antichrist, constructing an all-inclusive religion that seduces believers and nonbelievers alike. The Antichrist will also institute an economic system where the only way to conduct any kind of business is to have “the mark of the beast” on his forehead or his wrist.
