In describing the events of the last days, the Bible mentions a number of nations. Some, like Israel and Libya, are clearly identied. Others are believed to be identied, like Russia, China, and Sudan. But there seems to be no mention of the United States in these passages, specically or as a representation.
It is fairly safe to say that America will not play a role in end times events, but why? Here are a few possibilities.
The United States is destroyed, perhaps in a nuclear attack. This is not a pleasant thing to consider, but it is clearly a possibility. Considering how many nuclear weapons there are around the world, and the number of rogue nations and terrorists that oppose America, we can’t rule out that the United States may not exist when the end times events happen.
The United States declines as a world power. Over the course of history, most global powers do not last forever. From Babylon to Rome to the British Empire, they eventually falter and fall as other nations rise to take their place. Perhaps that will be America’s fate.
There is a great revival in the United States. A revival would not eliminate America as a power, but its effects would dramatically change things. If there was a great awakening to the gospel message in the United States, potentially tens of millions of Americans would be caught up in the rapture. The departure of that many people would dramatically affect America’s standing globally, perhaps opening a vacuum for the Antichrist to swoop in.
So what should we, as Christians, do in light of all this? We need to pray for our country like never before, and we need to reach out to a lost world with the gospel like never before.
Here is the promise of God in Scripture to every nation: “If My people which are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
