The youngest age group has a rather stable percentage of people who are either married or cohabiting. The declining trend in marriage or cohabitation among young people is confirmed by other Norwegian studies (Gulbrandsen, 1992 and Blom et al., 1993:48-49). The same pattern is also found in Sweden (SOU, 1994:73).

Figure 4 illustrates the change in civil status during the 1980s among young adults (20-29 years).
