    CONCLUSIONS

  • 1.

    The concept to supply drinking water from Krueng Mountala to Seulimeum and onwards to Banda Aceh is technical feasible.

  • 2.

    Costs for Intake, pre-treatment, transmission lines and reservoirs are estimated at US$ 18,566,000 and the costs of Supply network and service connections amount to US$ 23,520,000.

  • 3.

    The proposed scheme would solve the current problems with water treatment in Banda Aceh (high turbidity of raw water, risk of up-stream contamination incidents, high costs for Operation & Maintenance).

  • 4.

    The gravity fed system would require comparably lower operation and maintenance inputs (Electricity and chemicals).

  • 5.

    The estimated investment costs of some US$ 13 million for intake, pre-treatment and transmission line for the Banda Aceh area are in the same order of re-investments in the Lambaro WTP of Kota Banda Aceh, due in 10 years time.

10.FOLLOW-UP

  • 1.

    Furthering this concept could include:

    • At the water source

    • Collection and analysis water quality samples over a period of time, including analysis of trace metals, pesticides, major cations and anions, and nutrients - PO4-P, nitrate- N, nitrite-N, and ammonium;

    • Monitoring of water flow over a period of time, of particular interest will be the dry season base flow;

    • Proposal for source protection;

    • Evaluation of appropriate treatment process for raw water.

  • 2.

    With respect to the transmission line

    • Field verification of technical feasible alignments, in particular old railway alignment and irrigation channel.

  • 3.

    Concerning the service areas

    • Inspection of all existing facilities in Kota Jantho and Seulimeum with PDAM operators;

    • Mapping and analysis of existing networks in Kota Jantho and Seulimeum with the help of knowledgeable PDAM operators, e.g. using EPANET;

    • Compilation of information on ongoing and planned housing schemes in the area, the ‘airport city’ and the port-area development, realistic and robust demand forecasts;

    • Study of technical feasible service area as well as build-up over time using high resolution aerial imagery. The imagery can be obtained from the GTZ / SLGSR GIS- centre in Jantho. Contact person at the GIS centre is Jochen Kranik at jochenkranik@yahoo.com.
