VOLUME 2, NUMBER 1 • MARCH 2001
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT S Through the efforts of New York City Post Secretary Michael Scarano, our website (http://same-nyc.org) has become a very important tool to provide links to our membership, our programs, and to the national website. Also this year, thanks to the guidance of George Friedel, we have re-structured our newsletter so that all our Post activities can be highlighted. The newsletter contains special sections that highlight unique projects, sustaining member firms and various awards received by our members. AME’s New York City Post is a unique organization that provides the bridge between senior leadership in the engineering and construction ranks of the armed forces, and state and local governmental agencies within the private sector. Since June 2000, we have had an extraordinary year culminated by the successful 59th Annual Scholarship Dinner Dance held at the Waldorf Astoria on November 4, 2000. With special thanks to the organizing skills of the Dinner Dance Chairman, Harvey Sands and his Co-Chairs, Frank Lombardi and Judy Cooper, over 600 New York City Post members and their guests attended. The Scholarship Program is the benchmark for the scholarship programs for the entire national society. More than 200 scholarships were awarded this year to over 70 colleges and institutions. No other Post can match our commitment to encouraging and supporting the future leaders of our industry in their pursuit of higher education. Under the leadership of Karen Mohlenbrock and Elaina Moy, our Young Member Committee continues to attract and involve young Post members in Society affairs. The YMC holds regular meetings with presentations by industry specialists in design and construction. The YMC provides the opportunity for young professionals to have an active role in our Post. Our dues structure for sustaining member firms includes five membership positions, one of which is for a young member, below the age of 35. This year we have initiated programs that qualify for continuing education credits with special thanks to professor Bud Griffis. The New York City Post is the third largest post in the United States with over 600 individual members and 75 sustaining member firms. The activities of the Post are numerous. We have had over 14 Post meetings during the course of the year that have included many notable speakers and panel presentations. These meetings have discussed emerging issues that relate to current design and con- struction industry issues in our metropolitan area. Many of our initiatives this year are the result of the leadership and support of our past New York City Post President, Brigadier General Stephen Rhoades, Commander of the North Atlantic Division, and the New York Engineering District of COE, commanded by Col. William Pearce. This year also marks new leadership in our committee structures, including the designation of several new (*) committees. Each of these committees is led by a new chair. I ask and encourage each of you to become active in SAME and to volunteer your time and efforts to participate on these committees. You will find committee participation very rewarding. Please contact the respective chairs or our website to indicate the committee on which you will serve. For the rest of this year, we are focusing on reinforcing the basics of our Post, increasing our membership roles, and encouraging each of our members to become more active in the New York metropolitan community. The success of the Post rests on its members and the participation of members in Post activities. The Officers and Directors of the New York City Post encourages each of you to reach out and volunteer your support and services.
