MLA Works Cited Entry Format and Examples:

A Condensed Overview with the 2010 Update

The following is a condensed overview of the format for creating works cited entries in MLA Style.

Format:

Lastname, Firstname. Personal Interview. Date.

Example:

Author(s). Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication.

Example:

Henley, Patricia. The Hummingbird House. Denver: MacMurray, 1999. Print.

Format:

Author(s). “Title of Article.” Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. Medium of Publication.

Examples:

Buchman, Dana. “A Special Education.” Good Housekeeping 20 Mar. 2006: 143-8. Print.

Krugman, Andrew. "Fear of Eating." New York Times 21 May 2007 late ed.: A1. Print.

A Review

Format:

Review Author. "Title of Review (if there is one)." Rev. of Performance Title, by Author/Director/Artist. Title of Periodical day month year: page. Medium of publication.

Example:

Seitz, Matt Zoller. "Life in the Sprawling Suburbs, If You Can Really Call It Living." Rev. of Radiant City, dir. Gary Burns and Jim Brown. New York Times 30 May 2007 late ed.: E1. Print.

Format:

Title. Director. Performers. Production Company, Year of Production. Medium of Production.

Example:

Work in an Anthology, Reference, or Collection

Format:

Last name, First name. "Title of Essay." Title of Collection. Ed. Editor's Name(s). Place of Publication: Publisher, Year. Page range of entry. Medium of Publication.
