Step 1 - Determine a good date and time to collect GPS data Discussion: Much like the stars, sun, and moon, satellites “travel” across the sky as Earth rotates around on its axis every 24 hours. Satellite coverage “comes and goes”, so there are times during the day when there are too few satellites to collect good GPS data. Trimble software predicts the number and position of satellites in our area for any day/time. Procedure:

  • From a GIS Lab computer, Open GPS Pathfinder Office (PFO) either by dbl-clicking on a

desktop icon or selecting Start > Programs > Pathfinder Office. A Select Project window appears. Default appears in the Project Name window at the top:

  • Click OK. The main GPS Pathfinder Office window opens.

  • Select Utilities > Quick Plan:

  • Select the date you want on the screen below (default is today’s date).

  • Click OK.
