CLEAN YOUR COINS: Metal objects recovered from the ground frequently are in poor condition due to tarnish, rust and corrosion. There are many methods of cleaning, but the method used most often by professional conserva- tors is electrolysis, where the object to be cleaned is sub- merged in an electrically charged chemical solution that causes the corrosion to disintegrate. It’s cheap and easy to make a device to do this. Items needed: 1) an AC adapter (any old charger from a telephone, razor, radio or cassette player will do). Check the output. Minimum should be at least 300 milliamps. The higher the output the faster the cleaning. 2) A few alligator clips. 3) A stainless steel spoon. 4) A glass cup. 5) Some salt, and optionally, 6) some lemon juice. Cut off the small plug at the end of the adapter; separate

the wires and attach an alligator clip to each. Fill the cup with water, add a teaspoon of salt and stir well. A few drops of lemon juice will increase the conductivity. Put the spoon in the cup; attach one alligator clip to it and the other to a coin. Put the coin in the cup com- pletely submerged; do not let the coin touch the spoon. Plug the adaptor in and watch for bubbles. Bubbles should start in a few seconds. If the spoon bubbles, un- plug the adaptor and reverse the clips. Cleaning should- n’t take more than 5 to 7 minutes. CAUTIONS: Never leave your electrolysis machine plugged in and unattended; use plenty of ventilation as harmful gasses may be given off; never use on valuable coins as some surface will be removed.

TREASURE HUNTING SCAM DOWN UNDER: (Reprinted from the New Zealand Herald and the Australian Courier-Mail). A multi-million dollar treasure scam has landed two treasure hunters in an Australian court on charges of cheating in- vestors. The scheme raised over $2 million internationally, which was to be used to salvage lost treasure in shipwrecks around the globe. Investors were told that if all the lost treasure could be recovered from the ocean and its wealth dis- tributed, every person on Earth could live comfortably forever. Promises were made of returns of up to 1365 percent. No searches were ever conducted and investors have not received any returns so far. The principle charge is not that the perpetrators committed a fraud but that they acted recklessly by failing to register in Australia as an investment com- pany in violation of the Corporations Act. Prosecutors claim that if the treasure hunters had registered, then investors would have been aware of all the risks. Both treasure hunters pled guilty to charges for which they face a maximum penalty of 5 years in jail or a $22,000 fine or both. Further details can be found at www.fmdac.org Ralph Shape
