A Message From the Chair

Since its inception in 2004, the Women’s Initiative has had a positive influence on the profes- sional development of our female lawyers, the relationships they have cultivated with clients, and the Firm as a whole.

The rationale behind our initiative is simple. Our clients expect to see and work with women lawyers on their client relationship teams and in senior leadership positions. To be successful we must recruit, retain and promote the best lawyers. More than half of today’s law students are women and we need to get them in the door and nurture their careers at the Firm for as long as possible.

We firmly believe the Women’s Initiative is a major step toward achieving these objectives, as well as ensuring that White & Case is a place where everyone’s talent and contribution is recognized and utilized to the fullest. You are encouraged to participate in our Women’s Initiative programs and actively seek out the opportunities that enhance your professional development, enable you to share best practices with colleagues and prospective clients, and serve as a mentor for those who can benefit from your experience and achievements.

Women’s Initiative Goals and Progress

When the Women’s Initiative was formed two years ago, we set out to achieve three specific goals.

  • Build an inclusive, diverse environment. The Women’s Network was formed to produce networking events and provide visibility for the group. We increased and monitored women’s representation in recruiting, retention and advancement and named several women to key committees and positions within the Firm. Additionally, a Senior Associates Retreat was held to encourage retention and provide ongoing mentoring and career development.

  • Improve people management. An Upward Review Program of partners was instituted across US offices to enable associates to evaluate the management and leadership performance of partners with whom they regularly work.

  • Increase flexibility in how work gets done and how careers are developed. In addition to revising our maternity leave policy, a task force was formed to shape and disseminate guidelines for flexible work arrangements under our new Flex-Work Policy.

Achievements in these areas set the foundation for a promising year in 2006 and our goal is to take the Women’s Initiative globally. Focus groups will be conducted in our non-US offices later in the year to identify the needs of our female lawyers and determine how the Women’s Initiative can best serve them.
