TV TOKYO’S BUSINESS AREAS
To meet the needs of a wide viewer base, we provide a diverse sports program lineup. Starting with such staples as professional baseball, soccer and sumo, every day we cover results and highlights from a range of sports all over Japan as well as from professional sporting leagues in North America and Europe in which Japanese athletes compete. On weekdays, we present the latest sports news on Spopara Gekispo!, while on Saturdays and Sun- days Gekinama! Sports TODAY is presented by well-known former professional athletes. Our sports programs are popular among sports fans thanks in part to our on-the-spot reports provided by a team of reporters from TV TOKYO and other stations in the TXN Network. These segments are driven by accurate information and insightful sporting analysis. Sports P ro g r a m s
Particularly on weekends, throughout the year we feature live coverage of professional golf tournaments, top-level horse racing and other important sports fixtures. In 2003, we broadcast nationwide coverage of game seven of the Japan Series of professional baseball, gaining a 20% audience rating. Each year since 1983, we have GEKINAMA! SPORTS TODAY (Saturday, 23:45–0:25; Sunday, 23:24–0:00) provided satellite coverage of the French Open tennis tournament. Our regular sports programs, including fishing and golf lessons and motor sports, are also a popular part of our weekend schedule. As the lead channel of one of Japan’s commercial television net- works, TV TOKYO is a member of the Japan consortium, which jointly purchases broadcasting rights and shares production costs for specific events. Through the Japan consortium, we participate in joint program production and cov- erage of the world’s pinnacle sporting competitions, the summer and winter Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup™. In 2003, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of TV TOKYO’s commencement of broadcasts, we were the exclusive terrestrial broadcaster in Japan for Rugby World Cup 2003, held in Australia. Coverage of this event was very well received by our viewers, mainly thanks to our efforts to convey the excitement and emotion of the games and the competition. Also in 2003, we provided live coverage of a pre-season soccer match at Tokyo’s National Stadium between Real Madrid and FC Tokyo, which gained an audience rating of 16.9%. FIFA has designated Real Madrid as the 20th century’s top club. TV TOKYO’s program scheduling reflects the importance of three core principles: originality, quality and vitality. We are eager to develop and broadcast sports programming that meets the high expectations of sports fans. Gekinama! Sports TODAY provides results, highlights and interviews from a wide array of sports, including not only base- ball and soccer but also golf, basketball, sumo, winter sports and many others. FRENCH OPEN TENNIS Since 1983, TV TOKYO has provided coverage of the French Open, one of the four Grand Slam titles of the professional tennis world, direct from Roland-Garros in Paris. Our viewers love to support their favorite tennis stars, including Japanese players.
