The regular meeting of the Board of Aldermen, duly warned, was held on February 22, 2005 in the Bart Guida Aldermanic Chambers of the Biagio DiLieto Government Center, 165 Church Street.
President Perez called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
The members present were Alderpersons Healey, Chen, James, Jackson-Brooks, Perez, Colon, Clark, Smart, Addonizio, Mattison, Lee, Ellis-West, Santana, Jolly, Castro, Paolillo, DePino, Edwards, Blango, Jones, King, Shah, McCormack, Silverman, Voigt, Rawls-Ivy, Goldfield and Gorham-Walker - 28.
President Perez: “I would like to let everybody know that Alderman Rodriguez is not here because he suffered a mild heart attack on Saturday. He is doing fine. He actually was scheduled to go home yesterday. I’m not sure if he did, but I will ask you to keep him in your prayers.
Also, I would like to welcome everybody. This is probably one of the best turnouts that I’ve seen in a long time for a meeting of the Board of Aldermen. Having said that though, this is not a public hearing. This is a formal official meeting of the board, which means that only alderpeople can speak. People are not allowed to be coming over those gold bars to interrupt the meeting. I would like to ask your cooperation on that. I welcome you and encourage you in future meetings to also attend.”
Divine Guidance was invoked by Alderman Shah: “Good evening everyone. Tonight, I will be doing divine guidance and, in light of all the many cultures and many different religions that we have in the room today, I will simply be doing a moment of silence. If you would join me in doing this. (A moment of silence observed.) Thank you very much. Peace and blessings to Alderman Rodriguez.”
Alderwoman McCormack: “Before I move approval of the Journal of the regular meeting, I would like to welcome my class from Gateway. One of them said to me, ‘Is it always like this?’ And I said, ‘No, we usually sit here by ourselves.’ Having said that, another announcement, and that is that Item 15 on your agenda I will be passing over tonight. So it will not be discussed.”
