(PRESENTED UNDER SUSPENSION OF SECTION 24-1-A OF THE RULES OF THE BOARD OF ALDERMEN)
WHEREAS: After more than ninety years in business in downtown New Haven, the venerable and much-loved “Horowitz Bros.” store recently closed its doors on Chapel Street, sadly bringing to an end a great chapter in the commercial history of downtown New Haven; and
WHEREAS: this unique, landmark store provided exemplary service and observed the highest business standards in serving the New Haven community for nearly a century, as this fine store and its owners, Arthur, Leonard and the late Philip demonstrated an outstanding commitment to and passion for the City of New Haven and its residents; and
WHEREAS: the extent to which this great store, the Horowitz Bros. family, the employees and the customers made a unique and highly valued contribution to the neighborhood and the city was emphasized most recently when a large, broad-based group of Yale students, long-time customers, businesspeople, residents and general admirers of the establishment and Horowitz family circulated a petition to have the southwest corner of Chapel and State named “Horowitz Brothers Corner”; and
WHEREAS: it is fitting and appropriate that this landmark store on Chapel Street in New Haven’s downtown area should be commemorated by the naming of a corner in its honor, to permanently recognize the legacy of this extraordinary commercial institution in New Haven, and also as a way of thanking the Horowitz Bros. family, employees and customers for the tremendous contribution this wonderful store made to the life and enterprise of this community for nearly a century; and
WHEREAS: Arthur, Leonard and Philip, their employees and customers, and the Horowitz Bros. store greatly enriched the life and enterprise of this community and are very deserving of this city’s heartfelt appreciation and recognition for their exceptional commitment and dedication to New Haven’s downtown area, this city and its residents, as well as for the very inspiring, positive and stabilizing influence the establishment brought to the downtown area and the entire city for nearly a century.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED by the New Haven Board of Aldermen that in honor of the exemplary service and high business standards modeled by the unique Horowitz Bros. store, as well as the outstanding contribution, and positive influence this venerable establishment and its owners brought to New Haven’s downtown area for nearly a century, the southwest corner of Chapel and State Streets is hereby designated as “Horowitz Brothers Corner” in perpetuity to make its legacy in New Haven’s downtown officially permanent.
BE IT FURTHER ORDERED that the Department of Traffic & Parking is hereby directed and authorized to implement this order.
