Now have the students study the physical map for several minutes. Tell them that they are going to draw from memory a map of the world with the continents and oceans labeled when we complete this chapter. If time allows have students begin to draw a mental map of the world for practice.
Review for upcoming chapter test. Call on students to name a continent or an ocean and to spell it correctly. Model foldable for students.
Create a “Vocabulary Foldable” of the following vocabulary words. See directions for foldable below. Many students will already be familiar with this activity.
Vocabulary for foldable:
Fold to the red line
Cut from edge to fold.
Take a piece of notebook paper with holes on the left side.
Fold the paper vertically from right to left with the right edge coming over to the red line on the left side.
Unfold the paper and cut with scissors from the right side into the fold. (first cut should be on the first line of the paper.)
Skip down two lines and make the next cut. The number of cuts you will make will depend on the paper being either wide rule or college rule.
After all the cuts are made fold the right side back to the red line.
Write the vocabulary words – one per cut.
Now go back and write the definition starting at the red line on the left side.
Students can use this foldable to say the word, recite the definition and then open up the section to see if they are correct.
