APRIL 2, 2007SHAWNEE PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTESPAGE 6

Commissioner Bogina stated that personally he would like to see them try to sod it and perhaps plant bushes if it would help people identify it and not drive over it.

Deputy Planning Director Allmon stated that could be a difficult thing because it is in the right-of-way and he did not know if Engineering staff would support planting bushes in the right-of-way.  He noted that what was suggested was sodding the island.

Commissioner Pflumm stated that if sod would not exist and that he knew it was in the right-of-way, but suggested planting ornamental trees.

Deputy Planning Director Allmon suggested they could possibly place decorative pavers rather than sod in the island.

Commissioner Jenkins recommended some type of decorative rock or paver block that looks nice and let it go at that, because obviously vegetation has trouble there.  He stated just to plant sod to have it die again does not make much sense either.

Commissioner Bogina asked what the background was on the U-Haul trucks parked in the lot.

Planning Director Chaffee stated that the property is zoned Commercial Highway and knew that the trucks had been in that location for at least nineteen years.

Commissioner Bogina asked if they own more of the single family homes than the ones that the U-Haul trucks are parked at.

Ryan Cook answered that his client owns the three houses directly behind his business and the house that is behind the Westco Lube building.

Commissioner Bogina asked if by approving this specifically for all the ownership that they have, would they more or less be approving an expansion of the business into the residential neighborhood.

Planning Director Chaffee answered that if the applicant is going to do anything other than what they are currently doing they would have to come back before the Planning Commission for revised site plan approval.
