CITIZEN JOURNALISM

Who says we are a country of Illiterates !

The general statistics show that number of Illiterate people is more than literate ones in India.

The facts say something else. India has a surfeit of information modes. There are almost 60,000 titles registered as newspapers , at least 7,000 of these are standard publications. Then there are some 100 national television channels, and many more local channels as well as numerous radio channels. Now there are several citizen journalism websites on the web.

This shows Illiteracy? Someone is reading all this!

Citizen Journalists

The web and Visual media has spawned a new species - Citizen Journalists. People are more aware of the rights, and are more vocal for their grievances. Previously what could only be expressed in a Letter to the Editor, can now be aired on various channels, or shared online via internet.

There is considerably more freedom of expression on the web, where you can air your views on Forums, Blogs or on many social sites such as Orkut, Facebook, Twitter. The freedom of speech is in full form. Anyone can gather reports, write about them and even publish them on their own.

The central approach is two pronged.

  • 1.

You have genuine grievance or problem that you want a help with .

  • 2.

You see a solution to an existing problem.

This is fine and needed input from citizens.
