z Mechanism of Action: inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis by inhibiting peroxidase enzyme

Prevent oxidation of iodide, thereby inhibiting incorporation of iodine into tyrosine

z

Prevent iodinated tyrosine from coupling

z Also acts in the periphery to suppress conversion of T4 to T3, the more active form of thyroid hormone

z Note: These drugs prevent thyroid hormone synthesis and do not destroy existing thyroid hormone. Thus it may take 3 to 12 weeks to achieve normal thyroid levels
