Saifun Semiconductors has entered a technology licensing agreement with Sony to provide Saifun NROM technology, which stores two or four bits within one memory cell, in em- bedded NVM applications. Other li- censes include Infineon, AMD, Fujitsu, Spansion, Macronix, Tower and more. Kobi Rozengarten, presi- dent. www.saifun.com

Sonic Network, a provider of audio synthesis technology to the handheld consumer device and musical instru-

ment markets, has entered into agree- ments to license its EAS Embedded Audio Synthesis technology to Agere, Fangtek and one other well- known Chinese semiconductor com- pany. Agere licensed Sonic’s EAS ringtone technology for its new GPRS/EDGE wireless phone refer- ence platform. Fangtek will utilize Sonic’s EAS synthesis in a new fam- ily of multi-media processors aimed at the mobile audio and gaming in- dustries. A third China-based semi- conductor company, to be named in early 2005, has licensed Sonic’s EAS wavetables to provide high-quality audio in its multi-media ICs target- ing the Chinese mobile phone mar- ket. Cornice announced that Samsung has selected the 1.5-gigabyte Cornice Storage Element for the SPH-V5400 mobile phone, which is claimed to be the first mobile phone with an embedded storage solution. Prior to mobile phones, the Cornice Storage Element was embedded in “pocket- able” MP3, USB and GPS products. According to Cornice, today, its Stor-

age Element provides a 4x price ad- vantage over FLASH: roughly $50 for a 3-4 Gbyte Cornice drive versus 1Gbyte of Flash. Cornice believes that it will be able to sustain a 2 to 2.5x price advantage over time, even given the 40% historic yearly decline in FLASH pricing.

Cornice drives will follow the 40% annual increase in media aureal den- sities and currently use just one head. A dual-side platter and second head could easily be added, although Cor- nice is targeting the sweet spot of the portable device market, where price is currently more of a concern than density.Young Woo Lee, VP of Sam- sung’s Advanced Mobile Strategy
