KICK MECHANICS

Flexibility and balance are the key ingredients for good kicking; proper form, speed, power, efficiency (your ability to control the technique) are the mark of a superlative kicker!

FRONT KICK: Ap Chagi

Striking surface:Ball of Foot

Target Areas: ribs, abdomen, groin, face.

Things to Do: raise knee high

keep bottom of foot parallel to floor

bend back toes

keep supporting leg bent

straighten ankle on impact

Things NOT to do: strike with the toes

"scoop" the kick

lean back

drop the hands

raise the head

ROUND KICK: Tolria Chagi-

Striking surface: Ball or Instep

Target Areas:Ball - hard targets; Instep - soft targets

Things to Do: hold knee high

point knee at target

kick parallel to the ground

point supporting foot 180 from target

rotate on ball of supporting foot

either bend or point toes completely

Things NOT to do:relax the foot

lean backwards

lose plane of vision

drop hands

sacrifice form for height

SIDE KICK: Yap Chagi-

Striking surface: Heel or foot blade

Target Areas: all vital areas

Things to Do: raise the knee (in front of chest) as high as possible

maintain an inverted ankle position

keep knee and foot alignment parallel to floor

arch the lower back during extension

lock knee on impact

look over the shoulder

Things NOT to do:extend the kick before achieving  "first position" /chamber.

extend the kick from the knee

hook the leg after extending (during retraction)

lose eye contact with target

strike with the toes or with toes pointed upward or point the foot

drop the hands

lean way back - sacrifice form for height
