4.7  Methanol Produced from Biomass Gasification

Synthesis gas from coal gasification can also provide a feedstock for methanol production.  Numerous coal gasification systems have been studied and many of these considered for methanol production plants.  Table 4-21 shows energy inputs and emissions based on several methanol production studies.  Distillation vent emissions are taken to be the same as those from natural gas to methanol facilities.  Similar to the POX process, no air combustion occurs and exhaust emissions are minimal.  CO2 is produced in a shift reactor or left over from methanol synthesis and emitted from a purge vent.
