Report from your President and Vice President
We are delighted to report that 2006-2007 was a wonderful year for YUWO, from a lively Wine and Cheese Reception in September through two very interesting study groups, a great series of six Lunch and Learn lectures, a terrific group of guided tours to Naumkeg and Edith Wharton’s home, and to the Rose Center, Farmington Canal Trail, Yale Furniture Collection, and the Schweitzer Institute in New Haven and our environs. Our activity groups have provided a wonderful range of events throughout the year — everything from a new book group to art tours to gourmet cooking, movies, music together, ten- nis, bridge and many more!
The generous gift to the Magee Fenn Fund last year continues to give our scholarship program a boost in funds. We look forward to awarding scholarships to a truly remarkable group of women today. Our membership enjoys the addition of newcomers, who have joined many of our activities and are helping to lead YUWO into the future.
We thank all of you who have made this a delightful year. We enjoy working with you to provide the women in the Yale community with such exciting opportunities to pursue our interests, both intellectual and social, to develop friendships and to support our scholarship awards program.
Our special thanks to Priscilla Kissick and Betsy Suatoni for planning such a beautiful Annual Meeting and Scholarship Awards Luncheon and to Marty Sherman for producing our Annual Report.
Thanks to all of you, Patty Pollard and Johanna Becker
Twenty-five Newcomers joined YUWO during the 2006-07 academic year.
To inform women who had recently retired from Yale and employees (or their spouses) who had just arrived at Yale, a card was sent from YUWO in August inviting them to YUWO’s annual Wine and Cheese Reception at the President’s House in September.
Many of these women attended the reception where they met members and learned about the benefits of a YUWO membership. Some joined right away and signed up for future events. Others joined later.
Early in October, newcomers spent a pleasant evening, enjoying dessert and conversation at Trudy Bollier’s home where board members met newcomers and information was available. Lyn Howe impressed all of us with the number and variety of activities. Audrey DeFronzo was there in her role as membership chair. Others enjoyed remembering the good old times.
The last event held specifically for newcomers this year was an afternoon gathering in the library of the Gradu- ate Club on April 14 where photographer Mary Jo Warner exhibited her 2006-07 pictures of members enjoying YUWO activities and events. We can be thankful to Daisy Chapman, a Yale faculty wife who organized the first Newcomers’ Club in the 1940’s and who is the benefactor of YUWO’s current Newcomers programming.
