Active Humoral Immunity

  • B cells encounter antigens and produce antibodies against them

  • Active Immunity is:

    • Naturally acquired – response to a bacterial or viral infection

    • Artificially acquired – response to a vaccine of dead or attenuated pathogens

  • Vaccines:

    • Contain dead or attenuated pathogens

    • Spare us the symptoms of disease

    • Weakened antigens provide functional antigenic determinants that are immunogenic and reactive
