Over the course of the class students will be working on short (2 pp.), original, analytical papers focusing on course themes and primary documents. Questions for most of these papers will be distributed Wednesday in class, and the responses will be due in class on the following Monday. Some of these assignments will be in-class group assignments. There will be a total of ten short assignments. Students may complete all ten assignments, however only the best eight will count toward the final grade.
This course will have two midterm exams and a final. Midterm 1 will be an in-class exam on February 11. Midterm 2 will be a take-home exam due on 5 March. The Final Exam will be May 2, from 3:30 until 5:30 in CA 215.
Exams are to be taken on the dates indicated on the syllabus. If you believe you must miss an exam, you must see the instructor in advance regarding a re-take. If you miss an exam without having previously spoken with me, you must talk with me as soon as possible after the exam date. Re-takes will only be allowed under extreme circumstances and with evidence of the reason the exam was missed (e.g., Health Center receipt).
Later in the semester you will be assigned a 4-5pp essay on a topic surrounding World War II. You will be expected to use course materials and lectures to take a position about the history of WWII and make a well-supported, documented argument. I will distribute the paper topic in class four weeks before it is due.
