The Hawks’ Way
If we don’t make it happen, it will happen to us”
A Vision of the Future:
The proposed project will establish a new campus core – Hawks’ Way – that integrates academic and athletic complexes and creates a showplace that develops pride, passion and love for the University. The plan also includes a major renovation of the 40 year-old Tawes Gymnasium to house the Vernon “Skip” McCain Museum dedicated to the preserving the accomplishments of the Maryland State era of Hawk football.
A New Vision of the Future: Hawks’ Way, Restoring the Legacy
The Museum will capture the athletic achievements of our fellow Hawks who have made their mark in American sports history. Our success of the past will be permanently immortalized. The Museum will honor these extraordinary athletes, administrators and coaches in an outstanding array of artifacts that represents their glory. The museum would house several theme rooms of memorabilia of the Maryland State College’s football legends. The facility would boast interactive kiosks, a film room and a gift shop.
Throughout the museum, visitors will find rare articles, trophies, pennants, and capsule biographies immortalizing each Hawk. Each fall, during UMES’ homecoming activities at an annual legends banquet sports heroes of the past and present gather to share memories and honor great football legacy. Exhibiting Maryland State football memorabilia will provide visitors an opportunity to see first hand and up close the uniforms worn by their heroes, the vintage equipment used in the outstanding games and photographs of the athletes at the top of their careers.
