The following is a brief list of Hawks For Football other major accomplishments in 2005 and 2006:
On 08/11/06, Coach McCain was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana. A plaque honoring this momentous accomplishment is being purchased and will be dedicated during this year’s homecoming events. The permanent home of the Coach McCain’s plaque will be in front of Tawes Gymnasium (which we hope to be the future home of the Vernon “Skip” McCain Museum).
On 09/08/06, this year’s nominee, Sylvester “Swifty” Polk’s nomination package was sent to the College Hall of Fame. An announcement regarding this year’s inductees will be made by the Hall of fame in 04/07.
In 2005, a feasibility study was conducted and as a result a $3.2 million fundraising goal was established and agreed to by the Administration.
The Student Government Association (SGA) is currently considering a proposal presented by Hawks For Football to establish a Club Football Team and Marching Band. The plan would be funded by creating a special football activity fee of $50.00 per semester.
Based current enrollment levels the SGA proposal would raise over $400,000 per year, of which $300,000 would go towards creating a high quality marching band. Just as point of reference Morgan State’s marching band currently coast about $250,000 per year to operate. The remainder would be use to run the Club Football team.
On 09/01/06, the Hawks For Football website came on line. It is includes historical information, an online football store, and more. Please visit it at .
In 2005, Joanne created the Wire. The Wire is a online newsletter provides periodic updates of information about our reinstatement efforts and alumni news. Currently, the Wire is connected with over 500 fellow Hawks from around the nation. If you are currently not connected, you may do so by emailing Joanne at .
The new leadership of the National Alumni Association (NAA) is currently comprised largely of Hawks For Football members and supporters. Joanne serves as the NAA First Vice President and is Co-Chair along with me of Hawks For Football.
Further, we hope that you will continue to support the cause and convince your friends and colleagues to do the same. Attached for your review and use is a copy of our annual report. It provides a brief history of our program, a biography of Coach McCain, a listing of fund contributors and concept paper entitled “Hawk Way” which describes the Ultimate Goal we are all working towards. With your continued support we anticipate making significant progress towards our goal in 2007.
Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to give a special note of thanks to Mr. Stanley Jones. Stanley is one of the first Hawks for donate to the UMES/Vernon “Skip” McCain Reinstatement Fund and he has religiously donated $100.00 a month since our first Skip McCain Classic Football game in 2003. Just imagine where we would be if we had even 500 Stanley Jones’s. My sense is that Stanley understands that, “if we don’t make it happen, it will continue to happen to us.”
Again, thank you for your support with this important project.
Should you have any questions, please advise.
Peace be unto you,
Bryant C. Mitchell, Vice Chair, Hawks For Football, Inc.
