Descendants of Pierre Poinsett and Sarah Fouchereau

The early genealogy of the South Carolina Poinsetts is set forth in Oliveros (1980) and corrected by Crouse (1981). The Charleston Poinsetts, descendants of Pierre (Peter) Poinsett and Sara Fouchereau, include several notable lawyers, physicians and statesmen, the most prominent among them being Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779 -1851), the Secretary of War in 1837 and America's first ambassador to Mexico. The poinsettia plant was named after him, as he brought it back from Mexico and introduced it into the United States. Also, Poinsett County in Arkansas was named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, on 28 Feb 1838. (Coincidentally, one of our family, Claude Poinsett -213 lived and died in Trumann, Poinsett County, Arkansas.)

To aid members of my clan in extracting our descent from the information that follows, here is our ancestral line, from Pierre Poinsett Sr., of Soubise, France, through my grandparents, August Ephraim Poinsett and Martha Isabella Proffer:
